I stayed for a few days in Santiago and so one of my post-program visits was to the Human Rights Museum. The atrocities of the 1970s and 80s under Pinochet were documented mostly through video, but the image above shows one wall, covering nearly four stories, of all the individuals who were killed or kidnapped during that time. The following day I took the Parks and Politics tour with La Bicecleta Verde and when prompted, our guide discussed how Chileans don't blame the United States for our intervention with the military coup. He told us that no one believes the U.S. had malicious intentions or were actually involved in any of the kidnappings. I thought it was interesting that this was never mentioned during the program. It was never even mentioned as part of the politics tour before someone asked the specific question. Is this not important information or is it simply too sensitive? I would think someone would be able to talk about it.
